2020 Golden Globes: Gervais Takes Down “Woke Culture” in Hollywood
At the 2020 Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais shocked the crowd with his unfiltered monologue. Gervais is a stand-up comedian, actor, writer, film producer, director, and musician. His stinging satire criticizes Hollywood actors saying, “So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.” He claims because this is his last time hosting, “I don’t care anymore. I’m joking. I never did. I’m joking, I never did. NBC clearly don’t care either.”
During his monologue, celebrities were caught on camera either laughing or frowning at his crude jokes. Celebrities like Chris Evans got a good laugh from Gervais’ humor. A famous reaction that did not show the same joy as Evans was Tom Hanks. Hanks’ reaction has been circulating social media and he quickly became a popular meme.
Gervais went on a mission to destroy “woke” culture. He tried to make the ceremony as focused on the actual awards instead of all of the political drama that typically follows acceptance speeches. Gervais said, “So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God and [explicit] off, OK? It’s already three hours long.” His brutal insults and harsh comments stirred drama in the media. Whether you agree or disagree with Gervais, his monologue will go down in Golden Globes history.
