In 2015, a polarizing star was born when the single “White Iverson” was met with praise from the likes of Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa. His name? None other than Post Malone.  

Over the last four years, Post Malone has consistently topped the charts with hits like “Congratulations,” “Better Now,” “Sunflower,” and, most recently, “Wow.” However, there has been a growing number of (quite ignorant) people who have been egregious enough to say that Malone doesn’t deserve the fame, has no musical talent, or even that his music is just not good (crazy, I know). None of these things are true because Post Malone may just be the Michael Jackson of our generation.  

Let’s be honest, Post Malone might be the most innocent man on the planet. Yes, he likes to party, and drink, and smoke cigarettes, and has about as many tattoos as the Louvre has pieces of art, but he is always polite to fans and reporters; he is always seen with a huge smile, and he has never gotten into any serious controversy, which is something that not many celebrities can say. 

Many major music columns from Complex, an entertainment company and magazine, and Genius, a website discussing song lyrics and music, believe that Malone doesn’t deserve his fame and success because much of his music sounds derivative of itself. However, this is not the case as he has never stuck to one solid genre, giving him a new sound with each new album, as shown by the heavy hip-hop influence of Stoney and the mainly pop Beerbongs & Bentleys.  

Malone’s genre-defying music has been the topic of controversy since his first album was released in 2016. It could be said Malone needs to pick a lane between hip-hop, pop, and R&B. But in my humble, correct opinion, I feel like Malone’s blend of multiple genres gives listeners a nice surprise whenever a new song is released. Not being bound to one genre allows him to make whatever music he pleases without trying to contain it into a cookie-cutter mold of what people believe his music should sound like. While it could be confusing as to what category he should be in for awards shows or what Billboard chart he should be on, his music is still a form of art so how he wants to make music should be entirely up to him.  

Claims saying that the Post Malone’s music is not good are, in the simplest terms, downright wrong. From a statistical standpoint, his music is very good. According to Billboard, his debut album Stoney maxed out at number four on the US Billboard 200 while his second album Beerbongs & Bentleys debuted at number one on the same chart. He has also had numerous songs, such as “Rockstar” to “Sunflower,” reach still on top of the Hot 100. Now from a more vocalistic standpoint, Malone is as close to an angel as you could get. Who can resist singing along when the beat begins for “Sunflower” or not tear up with the heart-wrenching “Feeling Whitney?”  

Overall, Post Malone has defied expectations and become one of the most popular artists of the last couple of years. I mean, if my mom knows who he is then he must be pretty famous. So, like it or not, Post Malone is here to stay.
