What to Wear?
From Cher Horowitz to Bella Hadid, fashion has had its ups and downs throughout the years. This year is going to bring some new, and some old, ideas to the fashion industry. Some trends we were already seeing in 2022, Y2k fashion, and fresh ideas are all going to be seen throughout 2023.
Trends usually start on the runway, going from a fashion designer’s mind to the model’s walk during fashion week. There are fashion weeks all over the world, the “Big Four” events being in Paris, Milan, New York, and London. The pieces are then seen on a celebrity on the red carpet or on an influencer’s social media page. From there, the outfits are adapted to form a trend or become a part of an already established one. With a new year comes new fashion trends, and this is what you should keep an eye out for in 2023.
The term, “Bare it All,” which started to gain popularity in the fashion world after the lockdown, is used to describe little to no clothing. However, it has recently become associated with sheer clothing which fashion designers such as Christian Vierig and Tory Burch predict will be 2023’s big trend. During one of the most recent red-carpet events, Olivia Rodrigo was seen wearing a slip-dress, which was accessorized with a black bralette and matching boy shorts. Sheer clothing gives people the chance to express themselves in a new way. By putting themselves in sheer clothing, people may feel more confident in their own bodies. Of course, if sheer clothing doesn’t seem like something you would like, there will be other trends this year.
An obvious trend is 2000’s fashion (Y2K). Since bootcut jeans and silk scarves as tops started to appear on influencers once again in 2021, Y2K has begun to make a comeback. Flare leggings and low-rise jeans were already popular in 2022, but items like tube tops, chunky belts, and matching tracksuits will definitely start to hit the market this year. One of the most iconic looks of 2001 was Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s matching denim outfits at the American Music Awards. 2023 is taking a more modern approach with denim maxi skirts, oversized jean jackets, and jean dresses, which have all seen the runway recently.
However, Y2K fashion isn’t for everyone. New trends are created with every year; we don’t just recycle the old ones. The preppy aesthetic has been taking over TikTok with people wearing ribbed tanks and drinking from Stanley Cups. Preppy fashion is all about bright and fun colors. Oversized sweatshirts, crop tops, flowy skirts, and practically anything pink are the basis of preppy fashion. Name brands such as Lululemon, Kendra Scott, and Pacsun are all very popular in preppy fashion; however, it is also common to see people using “dupes” of these expensive brands. Dupes are a cheaper replica of popular items.
This year holds fashion opportunities for anyone to find what they like to wear. As each year goes by, people are becoming more accepting of new and unique ideas, and that is what fashion should be all about: dressing in clothes that are unique to you. Which brings us to the most important trend I see us having this year—originality. Wearing clothes that you want to, and not just the ones that you see on models and influencers, is always the best choice. You shouldn’t be judged for wearing clothes that you like, and you shouldn’t judge others for the same.
