Sequoyah skills team scores big
The Sequoyah skills team took home two big wins at their competition this past weekend. Senior Spencer Mann became the state champion and Sophomore Jacob Allred placed third in his event. The skills team is led by Automotive Technology teacher, Chuck Wilson. The team works together to ensure America has a skilled work field by focusing in on career and technical education.
Mann competed in the Automotive Service Technology Contest. The contestants were given ten stations which were unknown until the start of the competition. At the stations the contestants were given scenarios involving automotive technology. They had to then follow directions, show proper procedure, and demonstrate knowledge in each area.
“There was some tough competition including the defending state championship from last year,” said Wilson.
This competition was held by companies including BMW, Subaru, Honda, and Mercedes Benz. The trainers of these manufactures went to each station judging the contestants performance. Mann preformed each station, and his overall score ended up resulting in his title of state champion.
“This makes me so proud of him,” said Wilson. “He has worked so hard and he deserves it.”
Allred competed in the Power Service Technology section. This area studies small engine technology as well as small landscaping engineering. Honda, Briggs, Stratton sponsored this contest and also had ten stations for the contestants to preform in. Allred finished with third place overall. He still has two years left of competing in competitions.
“Again, tough competition so I am proud of Jacob also,” said Wilson.
This is the first time anyone in Sequoyah CTAE has won the title of state champion.
