Volleyball team dominates final home game on Alumni Night
On Tuesday night, the varsity volleyball team took the floor for warmups. As they practiced serving, setting, and hitting, a small student section congregated in the bleachers opposite the main section of parents and alumni. The game scheduled against the opposing Chattahoochee Cougars was originally intended for senior night, but some adjustments had to be made due to the current volleyball roster.
The current volleyball roster does not include a single senior player, and only one senior manager in Aiden Ingram. However, the volleyball team still found a way to celebrate its players, past and present, by hosting an alumni night. Before the game, several former players were brought out and recognized by their position and graduation year.
Sophomore Sayler Davies, whose sister Brae Davies is a 2019 volleyball alumnus, commented on the occasion after playing.
“I really enjoyed getting to see the impact that Sequoyah Volleyball has had on players now and players before us,” Davies said.
After the alumni were honored and the teams were introduced, the Chiefs took the court.
The Chiefs quickly jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first set. Their defensive stops and hitting contributed to the victory. Chattahoochee’s coach called a timeout when the Chiefs were up 20-5, but their momentum was not slowed. They won the first set 25-7 and pressed forward into the second.
The second set went much like the first, as the Chiefs gained a 17-8 lead after an ace by junior libero Skylar Martin. Martin later broke the all-time digs record during the game. The Chiefs completed their sweep of the Cougars with a second set final score of 25-14.
The volleyball team now looks forward to several non-conference games before the state playoffs. They are currently ranked by Maxpreps as the number one team in the GHSA 6A conference with an overall record of 35-1. With this victory, the Chiefs continue to prepare for the state playoffs.
