Wrestling team wins big at state
On Feb. 12-13, the wrestling team competed in their final tournament of the season, where they finished within the top ten in the state as a team. Head wrestling coach Joe Hulen offers his perspective on the team’s performance.
“I think we competed well against the best wrestlers in the state. We had four state placers,” Hulen said. “Logan Webster first, Charlie Throne fourth, Ryan Throne fourth, and Jake Labasi fifth.”
Senior Logan Webster, a wrestler all four years of his high school career, placed first in the state within the 220lb weight class.
“Logan is a tremendous competitor,” Hulen said. “The week before the state championships he took a loss to the person he would eventually wrestle in the state finals. As he got off the mat from that loss, he never panicked. He just kept working on his craft. At the state tournament, he dominated every opponent, including the one who had just beaten him the week before. It was great to see all of Logan’s hard work paying off.”
With state marking the end of the wrestling season, two of these state placers have already committed to wrestle in college: Charlie Throne to the US Coast Guard Academy, and Webster to UT Chattanooga.
Hulen and the wrestling team now begin preparation for the next season, hoping that it will go as well as this season has.
“Our off-season training will focus on getting stronger, and we will try to get as many new wrestlers as possible,” Hulen said. “To have a successful program, we need to have a larger population of wrestlers.”
