Girls Soccer

Having not won a game since 2020, the Lady Chiefs Soccer team achieved their first win of the season over Kell 4-0. This leaves the Lady Chiefs with a 1-3 record to start out the 2021-22 season. 

During the 2020-21 Season, the Lady Chiefs held a 1-7-1 record with the only win of the season being over North Springs in a non-regional game. The league record of 0-5 placed the Lady Chiefs in the 8th place of 6A Region #7. 

The 2021-22 season marks Head Coach Steve Schroter’s second year as head coach. 

Boys Soccer

The Chiefs soccer team has started out the 2021-22 season with a current record of 2-2, suffering losses to Forsyth Central and Pope, while beating out Milton and Blessed Trinity. Coach John Zonin has coached the team since 2009. 

“Our goal this season is to make it to state playoffs and win a county championship,” Zonin said. “One of our biggest challenges is our region placement. We play in a tough region, and everyone is good, so it is important that we play our best games in region play.” 

In the 2020-21 season, the boys’ soccer team finished with a 10-7-1 overall record, a 4-1 county record and 2-5 regional record. 

Tennis

The boys’ tennis team began the 2020-21 season with a 3-7 match record, 1-0 regional record, and a 1-2 overall record. They look to better their standings for the new spring season.  

The girls’ tennis team held a record of 2-2, a 3rd place finish at GITT, a round 1 playoff bid during the last season. During the playoffs, the Lady Chiefs suffered a loss to Cambridge, ending their 2020-21 season. 

The 2021-22 season has brought a 1-1 record for the Lady Chiefs after a match loss against Woodstock and a win against Kell. 

Track & Field

The 2021 track season brought a regional win to the Chiefs as they garnered three wins throughout the region meet. With multiple runners qualifying for state, the girls 4×100 and 4×800 relays achieved a 6th place finish at the GHSA 6A Track and Field Championship. 

With the loss of 2021 graduating seniors Izzy Castillo, Alesia Johnson, and Madison Ehmig, the track team will be look to senior Callie Bacon, senior Susanna Rogers, and junior Mya McRae for leadership throughout the season. 

Girls Lacrosse

Finishing off the 2021 season with a 7-9 record, 2-5 league record, and a 7th place standing in the 6A-7A Area 6, the Lady Chiefs lacrosse team look to improve this season despite the loss of multiple seniors. 

With the 2 of the 5 2021 graduating seniors going on to play in college, the girls lacrosse team will find leadership in junior Peyton Harper, who has given her verbal commitment to play lacrosse for Liberty University. 

After the departure of the 2020-21 head coach, the Lady Chiefs lacrosse team will be looking to new head coach Jessica Beck for guidance. 

The Lady Chiefs will play their first game on Feb. 9 against River Ridge in a non-regional matchup. 

Baseball

After finishing 3rd in the region with a bid to playoffs. The Chiefs Baseball team fell in the first round to Allatoona who ultimately ended up as a state finalist. This will be Coach Scott Barber’s first season as the varsity baseball coach. 

“Our first goal is a return visit back to the region playoffs then our second goal is a trip to the State Playoffs with the mission of Winning a State Title for Sequoyah HS and our program,” Barber said. We play a very long season with 3 games a week. So, my biggest challenge is to keep all of my players healthy (from sickness and injury) and for my players to keep a positive, mental state of mind through the grind of the long season.” 

The baseball team finished the 2020-21 season with a 13-18 overall record and an 11-10 league record, leaving the team 4th in the region. 

Golf

During the 2020-21 season, the Chiefs Golf team held a 3-1 record with a 1-0 regional record. The golf team’s singular loss occurred against Cherokee. 

The golf team suffered a loss of 3 graduating seniors, reducing the total number of returning players to 5. 

Senior Garrett Armbrust is expected to lead the golf team during the 2022 season. Armbrust, who holds an 18-hole average of 74, has signed to play golf for Lagrange College for the 2022-23 season.  

Boys Lacrosse

The 2020-21 season marked a 4-14 overall record, 1-7 league record, and an 8th place standing in the 6A-7A region for the Chiefs Lacrosse team. The team is coached by Head Coach Ben Sparks. 

The team will be led by senior Gabe Squillace, who has signed an NLI to play lacrosse for Newberry College. 

Looking to improve for the 2021-22 season, the Chiefs will kick off the season facing Kennesaw Mountain on Feb. 8 in a non-regional game.
