Purple Shampoo Challenge Review

Purple+Shampoo+Challenge+Review

In the last few years, the cosmetology industry has revolutionized the different ways we are able to change our hair in almost any way we think possible. From classic cut bangs with a spunky twist to a rainbow of colors covering your entire head, the possibilities are endless. In terms of lightening hair, there are many options as well. For a more permanent solution, bleaching and highlighting is always an option, but if you are looking for a less expensive route, cosmetic companies have come up with purple shampoo products, which, at first glance, seem like the perfect option for everyone.

Despite the horror stories of purple shampoo turning blonde hair silver and drying out hair, I was still interested in this idea due to its cost effectiveness, potentially quick results, and the natural keratin proteins that are used to lighten it as well as keep hair healthy. Purple shampoo also contains a violet pigment that acts like a toner, which ultimately naturally lightens hair colors.

The original purpose of this product was to use it as an alternative to normal shampoos, and then it would gradually lighten your hair. However, in recent weeks, a new trend has reached a population of younger girls who do not want to spend the time and money it takes at a salon to lighten their hair. As seen on social media outlets including “Tik Tok” and “Instagram,” the #purpleshampoochallenge entails putting the shampoo in your hair when it is dry, leaving it there for around fifteen minutes, and then washing it out.

Before doing this challenge myself, I researched “top purple shampoo brands.” After looking on a few different websites, I decided to purchase the 8.5-ounce bottle of purple shampoo from the brand “NEXXUS” off Amazon for $8.39. I personally have thick hair, so going into this task I completely underestimated how difficult and time consuming it would be to make sure I covered all my hair. If you are applying the shampoo yourself, I suggest using a hair dying brush to make sure you get your roots covered. It would also be a good idea to have a friend help you out with this, as they would have a better view.

Going into this challenge, I had high expectations as my hair is blonde and I was looking for a lighter tone. In total I spent around an hour and a half covering my hair with the shampoo, letting it sit for 20 minutes, washing it out, and drying my hair.  I did not get the results I was hoping for because I didn’t notice any drastic differences in my hair color. This could be due to many factors including the shampoo brand, how long I left it in, or my hair already being blonde

I know it is possible for my hair to be lightened as I have tried using lemon juice or just simply spending time in the sun. This method was just not the best for me. In the grand scheme of things, purple shampoo has proven to lighten hair when used properly. While I do not have any noticeable results after my first time trying this out, I can still say I am interested in possibly giving this challenge another chance, but I would change the few factors that may have led to my lack of results. For those considering taking part in this challenge, I would encourage you to do research on the best brands, and possibly further investigate the best ones for your tone of hair.
